About the Artist

Rick Hohmann
Artist / Photographer / Stylist

Rick was born in Bay City Michigan, raised throughout the United States, and fortunate to have ended up in Southern California.  Rick lived in 9 different states by the time he was 12. Moving always meant traveling light and luckily Rick always had pencils and paper to draw on and constantly doodled.  He began drawing by copying from the “learn to draw” advertisements on the match book covers. Rick drew on everything and was kept after school to clean desktops because he drew murals, dragsters, Jetson characters, and later surf scenes on them, which were always unappreciated by his teachers.

Not knowing the artistic direction to go in, after high school Rick, along with his best friend joined the Army and had an opportunity to live in Germany. Upon his return he felt the need to express himself and work with his hands. Hairstyling was a natural progression for him and he earned his license to cut hair.  He also enrolled in drawing and painting classes.  Rick would “sculpt” hair and is a successful stylist and colorist.  In 1995 he and his wife would open Ian Richards Hair Salon and a Day Spa in Mission Viejo.

Surfing and the ocean along with the California lifestyle have had a major influence in his paintings and photography. Being a surfer most of his life gave him a unique perspective. His wave paintings and pastels reflect a surfer’s view of what the ocean looks like. Nice glassy rights and lefts. Cool mornings with a slight offshore breeze with a light texture on the water, or just the way the light and colors play in the reflections of land and water.

His landscapes generally reflect scenes on or around the beach. While his still life’s try to capture detail and depth. He strives to create the feeling that makes you want to touch the canvas and raise the question, "Is that a painting or a photograph? "

Photography was also something he enjoyed and incorporated into his art. He has expanded his photography to event, panoramic and street.  Photoshop has also opened an entirely new dimension to his photography, as he can provide restoration, enhancing, digital imagining and colorizing.

Recently Rick has been experimenting with “Found Object Sculptures”.  After many trips to swap meets, garage sales and the goodwill, he came up with enough metal objects to try something new. This involves bending, drilling and riveting to create many whimsical people, animals and objects.  So far it has been a success and he has been selling lots of whimsical creatures from parts and pieces. Where will it lead? Who knows, but for now he is having fun.

Rick currently lives in Mission Viejo with his wife of 35 years.  They are the proud parents of two wonderful children, Kristina and Ian which are now young adults. He is a self-taught artist with the help of intermittent classes. His passion and artistic ability has developed him into a Stylist, Artist, Photographer and Sculptor.
